this is what disqualifies you from being a parent?

Last year I watched Jesus Camp and read The God Delusion at around the same time. They proved to be complementary, since Jesus Camp depicts the people Richard Dawkins rails against, those who turn their kid into a [insert descriptor of particular religion here] before the kid is old enough to make a conscious decision for him or herself.

Tonight, I spent a chunk of the evening debating the New Jersey news story about the couple barred from adopting a little girl. As you've probably heard, the couple indicated that the man was an atheist and the woman a pantheist, which convinced the courts that they would be unfit parents. According to the judge, "the child should have the freedom to worship as she sees fit, and not be influenced by prospective parents who do not believe in a Supreme Being."

For real?! The last time I checked, the U.S. was a secular country with a mix of people of all kinds of religions. And I would think that there are far more important and obvious criteria with which to judge whether one is fit to raise a child. I don't even think I need to list them.

I hate fighting a stupid argument with another stupid argument, but I found myself doing it over and over this evening. Why is OK for evangelical Christians in the U.S. to adopt, even though they'll influence a child because they do believe in a Supreme Being? Or am I missing a news story on that one?

Gnashing my teeth at the heavens... where there may or may not be a supreme being.

But if there is... WTF, God? I don't buy the suffering arguments and all that crap.

Either God is good... or God doesn't care.

But when PEOPLE care... you know, the folks that have to actual participate in daily life down here... why are we turning them away from being loving parents.

Good gawd, yall.

Agreed. Especially when you don't need a license to have a biological child. I know that's a cliche, but seriously. There so many parents out there who are just ass. (Thankfully mine weren't two of them. I'm guessing yours weren't either.)

While it borders on genocide... and population control... I'd be ok with some sort of IQ test before parents are allowed to conceive. ;)

Mrs. Sniderman and I sat through a birthing class long ago where one Mom seemed horrified when we spent the night on labor and the process thereof. She was seriously mortified that a child would sprout from between her legs. It was really sad. And scary when you realize that she was smart enough to come to class... but too dumb to understand how the basic biology of it all worked.

Hee Hee....

It is written in the Bible, Quran, and the Torah that God hates shrimp.

Doesn't matter how you cook them. Boiled, broiled, fried or sauteed, He just isn't that big on them; in fact he is not a big seafood lover at all. He doesnt mind fish, though.

He also does not care for The Pork.

So a prerequisite for strong parenting skills should be diet based. Any prospective parent must pass the Shrimp litmus test, and refrain from the bacon.

Do you now, or have you ever, eaten THE shrimp?

Would you consider bacon bits on a salad, as OK?

I am thinking that these Pantheist / Atheists showed up with a cocktail sauce stain, or a BBQ sauce stain, and then got caught in a dishonesty.

I mean if you would lie about bacon bits, what wouldn't you lie about. Including your genuine affection, love and protection of a child.

Emory, I'm sad to report that I've failed yet another 'are you a good person' test. My backsliding knows no bounds.
