and i'm the one who's single, vol. 2

Recently, I ran into an old colleague on the street. I asked how she was doing. Here is the conversation that ensued:

Colleague: Well, remember that guy I was dating? We're getting married next week!

Me: Wow, that's great. Congratulations.

Colleague: Yeah, it means we won't have to pretend anymore.

Me: What do you mean?

Colleague: Well, you know how Rob's a bigwig in the company we both work for. Well, he didn't think it was right for anyone in the company to know that we were living together, unmarried. So we've been doing pretty much everything separately. If we go to Wal-Mart, we walk in separately, do our shopping on our own, then meet up again at the car. If we're in the car together in town, I try to duck when we hit a stop sign or stop light, to make sure nobody from work sees us in the car together. But now that we're getting married, I don't think he'll want to do that stuff anymore.

Me [trying to act all casual when alarm bells are ringing in every last bit of my body]: Ummm... yeah, OK.

So let's just think about this for a second: that guy just got married. That guy. And I'm still single.

These kind of relationships are the worst kind of relationships. Keep in mind that a relationship based on 'sneaking around' and fear, will lead to more sneaking around and fear - or at least the worry of it.

Now I am not saying that I know everything about women - in fact I would not claim to know anything about a women at all - but it seems to me that women happily accept any role a man pins upon them. This whole episodic cowing, and abandonment of self worth, in favour of public opinion just reaks of the kind of crappola women subject themselves too. Yep, good enough in the sack, good enough to raise his children, but not good enough to tell HR to kiss his (blankety blank) I suppose it's easier to tell her to kiss his ---.
I would label this 'dude' loser weak tit, and a damned dishonest one at that.

GRRrrr.

You need another catagory beyond 'boys are stupid' and creat a 'girls are just dumb' one.

If this couple cared enough about one another, and was based on love and respect, then a world be damned attitude would be evident.

This relationship started stressed from the outset, and I would not be surprised to see this fail altogether - or turn miserable quickly.

Of the two relationships, I would hedge that the unlikely 'chinese take-out' one will last longer, and be more fulfilling than the 'sneaky' Mao-Mart one.

Hmmm. Good to know this makes someone out there as crazy as it makes me. I don't think I ever want to meet that guy, because my mouth likes to move in politically incorrect ways. I hope everything's different for these two now but somehow I doubt it.

And I totally agree on your prediction--wait for the next installment in the series though.
